PROTECT
PROTECT is an international cardiology study looking at Dobermanns affected by dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a disease of the heart muscle. Vetmedin has been shown to have significant benefits in the treatment of DCM once clinical signs develop. This study will investigate the benefit of medicating Dobermanns with asymptomatic DCM to identify whether this medication will increase the time taken for clinical signs to develop, and also prolong overall life expectancy.
PROTECT is a clinical trial, spanning 3 years, investigating Dobermanns with DCM. During the first year of the trial, until December 2007, Dobermanns aged 5 to 9 years (inclusive) will be screened to identify those which have DCM but aren't as yet showing clinical signs of heart failure. These dogs will be eligible for entry into the study. PROTECT involves 11 centres across the UK, as well as one in Canada
